TRU (Tobacco. Reality. Unfiltered) Youth
|
TRU Youth are making a difference in Guilford County! Volunteers from many different high schools in the county are working to promote smokefree public places and to discourage their peers from using tobacco products. Their activities have included conducting surveys in public venues such as Emerald Pointe/Wet and Wild, trash pick up efforts in local parks, and promoting the 100% tobacco-free policy on their local school campuses. Students are trained in media literacy and media advocacy, and they are well-versed in their tobacco facts. Over winter break they have taken on such policies as promoting tobacco-free pharmacies, educating local convenience stores through "red flag" campaigns, and promoting the NC Quitline to friends and parents. If you are a high school student who lives in Guilford County and you would like to become involved in TRU, please contact TRU Advisory Board Coordinator, Michelle Gill-Moffat at 336-641-3571. Meetings are held in the evenings, weekends, or teacher workdays. Want to find out more about youth smoking and tobacco use rates in North Carolina? Click here.
